seeking correct citation

I have written a manuscript and wish to make mention of Hesse telling the story of a man falling from a cliff and as he falls he reaches for a ripe strawberry. Will someone please tell me in which novel this story is told, character name, page. Thanks very much.

Hi Dean,
I think you are wrong. The story you have cited is an old buddhist story. It was cited and worked out in a poem from the german poet Friedrich Réckert. I never heard that this story occures in one of Hesse's works.

Thanks very much for the favor of your response to my inquiry, and correction on the facts of the story about the strawberry. For the life of me, I could not recall having read it in Hesse works and only remembered that someone had attributed it to Hesse.
