Steppenwolf Report Reply to this post

I'm writing a biographical critical analysis of the novel Steppenwolf. Does anyone knowwhere I can find info on looking at Steppenwolf from a pyschoanalytic viewpoint. Thanks for helping me.

If your report is expected to contain biographical information, as you seem to indicate, you probably need to include information about Hesse's own psychological situation in the early and mid-twenties. You should mention that he renewed some sessions with C.G. Jung and that he entered into a problematic relationship with young Ruth Wenger who became his second wife. These expriences seem to have fed into "Steppenwolf" but the question is whether the book in itself is a symptom, or a successful attempt at a cure by Hesse who was grappling with crises in his personal life (see "Crisis" poems) as well as with the disquieting social and political situation in which he found himself in the Twenties. If the book offers an attempt at a solution (as did "Demian" before), you could certainly find aspects of an analytical therapy particularly in the experiences Hesse describes in the Magic Theater.

I certainly agree the writings of the Georgian professor Reso Karalshvili's are very perceptive and important. Several of his books and essays on Hesse have also appeared in German, if that is any help? The Hesse Page HHP will soon reprint one of his essays in German translation.
