I think that Hesse's novels were more memoirs of his life as seen through the eyes of fictional characters. Such as Siddartha where he goes on a journey to find himself where at the same time Hesse was going through similar trials. In Steppenwolf, the lonely and introverted Haller is the perfect example of Hesse during his times of lonliness during the winter of '46. I would appreciate it if I could get some feedback for my literary analysis paper.

Almost all of Hesse's novels are blatant adaptations of his life; he used the novel form for this reason. Every character, village, school, musical instrument, NOUN can be found in his essays and biographies. It would be too easy to write about his biographical/recit style alone. If you must write about Hesse, it may actually be more challenging and interesting to see whether or not this carries through into his poems. He wrote an abundance of poetry and was better known in Germany as a poet than a novelist (you may notice he even calls himself the Poet in his books), although his novels may survive longer due to their popularity internationally. Or, depending on the required length of your paper, how the characters develop through each novel, although you would have to read every novel he ever wrote in order to be honest, as well as the essays and biographies so as to understand the importance of each noun).

Hesse captured my heart for the first time at 18 when I did one of the first translations of German to English of his short story masterpiece "Iris" - I am now 58. Everything that Hesse has ever written is some reflection of his complex personality - ever character is a part of him. the work of scholarly criticism is futile unless you take Hesse into your heart and become one with him - he bares his soul in many guises - try reading the prologue to Demian - he had just undergone pschoanalysis with Jung so it is very introspective - good luck

You are absolutely correct - I have read just about eveything he has written - including anthologies of short stories. If you read carefully, his writing is in poetic form - as you correctly stated he is first and foremost a poet - a lot of what he writes is dream sequence stuff
