Jung and Hesse: More psychological connections Reply to this post

Here are my notes on Jung; I cut out everything that my fellow researchers and I felt was relevant toward HesseÁs psychological profile, as well as, his writing.

CARL JUNG:
- Daily mask: persona = mask we wear when we come in contact with people, the way we want to be looked at.
- Incestial Spirit: consciousness comes out, connection with heathen past
- ËThinking, feeling, sensation, and intuition are important to look at, but we cannot deal with the psyche if we donÁt consider religion too.Ó
This Jungian belief can be seen throughout HesseÁs work ü Demian, Siddhartha, and Narcissus and Goldmund are just a few prime examples.
- Complexes: can seize control over entire existence
- ËWe need to live in our unconscious life üÓ
Steppenwolf, pg. 129 ËI found the disintegration of the personality by no means a pleasant and amusing adventure. On the contrary, it was often exceedingly painful, often almost intolerable.Ó
- Individuation: making unconscious, consciousness
- Shadow: animalistic part of our personality (urges us to do things we would not normally do)
For all of JungÁs shadow theories, Narcissus and Goldmund may provide an interesting comparison. More specifically, check out GoldmundÁs psychological development after he decides to wander, and resign from the Ërequired/normal/socializedÓ human existence.
- Recognize shadow = Dark-side: personal, national, international
- Dark Shadow projects itself when not understood
- Shadow can only be lifted when itÁs consciously recognized
- Masculine/Patriarchic society: neglects soul
- ËMood in landscape, itÁs in the soul too.Ó
Each and every book that Hesse has written, could reflect this statement ü this should be an easy connection to make ü
- Imagination = ManÁs highest value

Anima and Animus: characteristics of opposing elements ... Anima refers to feminine, and animus refers to male.
For this, a reasonable connection could be made to Steppenwolf ü for example, in the First Owls edition (1990 pg.134) ü Hesse says, ËAt many moments the old and the new, pain and pleasure, fear and joy were quite oddly mixed with one another. Now I was in Heaven, now in Hell ü)

- Analytical Psychology: we are shaped by the past and also our goals, hopes, and aspirations.
- Dreams exist in order to restore psychological equilibrium.
- Personal unconscious: memories, impulses, and other experiences that have been suppressed or forgotten.

I think it's interesting that after undergoing analysis with Laing and having what seemed to be some interesting discussions with Jung himself, Hesse then dissassociated himself from Jung. I guess in a way it makes sense...if one is truly living an individuated life, then even Jung would stop "working"...

Sometimes our emotional problems/existential anxieties are what influences our ability to produce the most pure forms of art. Maybe Hesse felt that he could best discover himself by not turning to others for answers ... maybe the best form of therapy for Hesse was written expression ...

Just a thought.
