I think Hesse represents the Nietzsche's reader in his last books.I mean, Nietzsche himself shows a lot of confidence and strenght in his writings, but never shows the confusion that a person who lived his whole life under the ocidental moralism should bare when facing the new values, the values of life.Herman put the values of life "into our lives".
So, I think Hesse is an example of how can Nietzsche "act" in our lives,the common ones :).
P.S:Of course in Hesse's books you can feel influence of other philosophers such as Pascal or Schopenhauer.
